FIELD NOTES
How to choose a tennis racquet
Start with your game, then narrow the options.
Know your starting point
Write down what you play with, how often you play and what you want to change. If you are starting out, ask a coach or shop about borrowing or demoing several options.
Compare like with like
Unstrung and strung weights are different measurements. Confirm the generation, length, head size and grip. A family name alone does not identify a frame.
Build a short list
Include strings and stringing in your budget. Specifications help organize candidates; they cannot fully predict how a racquet will feel to you.
Give the demo time
Play more than a few shots. Notice whether you can still move the frame comfortably near the end of the session. Record the strings and tension used in each demo.
